What metals should be recycled in New York?

As we tidy up our backyards and clean up our garages and storage units, we should keep the environment in mind and recycle as many items as possible. That raises the question: What metals should be recycled in New York?
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, New Yorkers are producing way too much trash. They estimate over 4.5 pounds per person per day in New York State! By comparison, Orange County residents produce far less. (Source: Orange County Insurance). Apparently, New Yorkers have a terrible habit of throwing all garbage into one receptacle. That includes metals, glass, plastic and all types of compost materials.
New Yorkers are steadily filling our 30 landfills with approximately 6 million tons of waste per year across the entire site. We also send nearly 2.5-3 million times of rubbish to special facilities called “Waste to Energy” facilities.
In addition to all of the massive amounts of trash being transferred to the landfills and Waste to Energy (WTE), we also send an enormous and additional 6.1 million tons to neighboring states (circa 2008).
We can all help in reducing our pollution and reduce our carbon footprint by learning what metals should be recycled in New York.

Bear in mind that dishwashers, refrigerators, ovens and many other appliances manufactured from before to thousand and one have as much as 100 pounds of steel in them. All of this steel is recyclable as evidenced in new steel products which typically have 25 to 100% recycled content according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
